Why do rally cars mostly sound the same?

In my recent exploration of the world of rally car racing, I've noticed an intriguing detail – most rally cars seem to have a similar sound. This similarity is primarily due to the specifications set by the motorsport's governing bodies, which include certain engine types and exhaust systems that create a comparable noise. The use of anti-lag systems also contributes to this distinctive, uniform sound. Besides, the fact that many rally cars are modified versions of production cars also results in a degree of uniformity in sound. So, while each car may have its unique notes, the overall symphony of rally car racing holds a familiar tune.
